Establish Property Lines
Check your closing papers from when you bought your house – sometimes there can be a copy of a survey in that paper work which we can use to determine property lines. Another tip is to check the corners of your property for pins, and lastly call a surveyor to purchase a survey.
Procure Permits
The easiest way to establish guide lines for your fence layout is by reaching out to your local municipality or city and asking them what the set backs from the property line would be, what fence styles they allow, and any other guidelines they require.
Know Your Footage
One good tip is to try and measure your estimated fence layout beforehand so you can try to get some ball park numbers before someone comes out to measure. The best way to do this is to take a measuring tape and measure as best as you can. Another option is to use Google Earth. They have a nice feature that can be used to measure your property digitally. It’s accurate enough that you should be able to use it to get some ball park numbers.
Understand Where Your Utilities Are
The easiest way to do this is to call 811 PA One. Call and say you are planing a project and then mark the area in white marking paint. With that being said, a PA One call should be done by whoever installs the fence, regardless. This means that the property should be marked come install time with any adjustments made.
Notify Neighbors
Another good tip is to notify neighbors of your intentions to put up a fence to see if it will cause any problems. If they don’t like it, put up privacy fence so you don’t have to see them anymore! Just kidding! It is a good idea to let them know to make life easier for everybody, though.
